Traditional fleet

When you think of GPS or Fleet Management software, you probably picture a traditional fleet.

Typically, this is a group of vehicles that are all the same color, make/model, etc... They could be dump trucks, school buses, taxi cabs, work vans or many other types of fleet vehicles.

If you own a traditional fleet, you can choose from many fleet management solutions that are available on the market today.

But what if your fleet includes vehicles that you do not own?

What is a virtual fleet?

Virtual Fleet - /ˈvərCH(o͞o)əl/ /flēt/ - noun
A temporary group of people, equipment, and vehicles that work together for a common purpose.

BroadLoop defines "fleet" just a little differently.

No fleet - some asphalt contractors do not own a single dump truck; however, they rely on their fleet of dump trucks every single day for millings and paving

Mixed fleet - municipalities with public works department likely own many trucks and equipment, but still rely on private contractors to round out their mixed fleet

Leased fleet - small-medium sized general contractors often take advantage of truck leasing programs.  They can add/remove trucks to this elastic fleet frequently

Personnel tracking - rural water utility companies have technicians out reading meters, hooking up new service, checking on pump stations, etc... Safety is improved by having the precise location of the technician in the field, not just where they parked their truck.
